When I enlisted several decades ago, I had the option of taking Basic Training at any post in the country. Being from New York City, I knew that Ft. Dix (NJ) was a hole, and any post in the South (it would be July when I started) was absurd.

I wound up choosing Ft. Lewis, WA and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. During the months of July and August there were only three days with any rain, temperature was rarely above the 80's and, best of all, we had views of Mt. Ranier from a large part of the post.

Coming back sweaty and yucky (even without high temps), it made you FEEL cooler looking up and seeing the snow covered peak.
