I haven't really done serious automating, but just finding information has not been simple, as you say. When I wanted to find out about automating Microsoft Graph, I found that the Visual Basic help for Graph was not installed, so I'll have to go bother the sysadmins. I also found a book on the sysadmin's shelf which claimed to be an "Office97 Programmer's Guide" by Microsoft Press, and I thought "aha, just the thing I need." When I actually looked at the thing, it seemed to be full of trivial user interface stuff that should have been in the regular user's guide. The actual object model descriptions were really thin.
