Evan,
It is decidedly NOT "logical" given other taxation practises prevalent in Canada and other countries.
For instance, if I purchase something in Quebec and have it shipped (by the store) to Ontario I do not pay Quebec sales tax on the item. If I buy something from e-Bay I do not pay the local sales tax (assuming non-Ontario origin) of the municipality/state of the product origin.
And most illogical is that foreigners have to pay the tax but can apply to get that money back! I can understand (somewhat) this being so if the foreigner is present in Canada and is consuming some goods and services here. But it is most difficult to comprehend for a person who is NOT even IN Canada! It makes no sense whatsoever and is, at best, a hope on the part of the government that some will find it too cumbersome to apply for the refund. This is no way to operate a business, let alone a country!
That you find all this "logical" makes me think you've moved into marketing < s >
cheers
>>The Canadian taxation department has (once again) adopted a crazy "rule" for the application of GST/HST, this time to your service.

>Hi Jim. It makes perfect sense.

>>I do not see ANY reason why I have to pay the rate of the HST when I live in Ontario.

>You made a purchase in Michel's province, you have to pay the sales tax their. Just as if you bought it in person. Very logical. This isn't a poll tax, it doesn't matter you live, it is a sales tax, that taxes where the transaction took place.
>
>>I further understand that non-residents of Canada are being FORCED to pay this HST too.
>
>Sure they have to pay the tax, but they can apply for 100% refund as foreigner.
>
>>I hope, Michel, that you can achieve a reversal of this STUPID stance by the federal taxation people.
>
>I can understand that you don't want to pay the tax, but it is logical.
