Thanks for the ideas. I'll have to experiment with your constant of 27 pixels - I've been having problems coming up with such a constant "constant" as I change fontsizes and small/largefont modes. I'm sure there's a connection to fontmetric() in here somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.
