To remove all but numeric characters:

lcMask = chrtran(thePhoneNumber,'0123456789','')  && Leave only the unwanted characters
if not empty(lcmask)
  thePhoneNumber = chrtran(thePhoneNumber,lcmask,'')  && Remove unwanted characters
endif
