As a couple of people said, today is the Jewish festival (not a holy day) of Purim, based on the book of Esther. It's very late this year.
Also as others said, it's Good Friday.
This combination of Good Friday and Purim is fairly strange. As I understand it, Good Friday is the most solemn day in the Christian calendar. Purim, otoh, is a day of merriment and celebration.
One of my students informed me that March 25 is a Greek national holiday, as well.
