I think it happened out of competition, acquisition (wars and battles) and jealousy. Human by nature are very selfish beings. In natural selection of things, selfishness is not a bad thing. Their survival depended on it.

And it could have happen as you said. Someone probably thought "why? Why am I wasting my energy chasing these stupid antelopes every day? Why don't I catch a couple of them alive and breed them and harvest them for food and clothing?".
