MSDE has a 2 gig limit per database. Multiple databases are permitted. However, there is a user connection limit, after which speed is throttled to match the Jet engine. ...and MSDE is a hassle to move from computer to computer.

You may want to investigate MSDE 2005 (SQL Express). The beta is released. It promises portability, 2 gig limitation removed, and no throttling of performance.

All things considered, I would split the tables horizontally or vertically. You will get better performance as a side benefit.
