Is it possible that one HD has cache and the other doesn't? Some HDs changed almost overnight in terms of coming without/with.
Are both HDs EIDE, or might one be SATA? A SATA drive has a different place to set this.
I also wonder if partitioning a HD might have some impact on the availability of the option. Might one be partitioned and the other not?

On the other machine this option is not selectable, it is greyed out, and the check box appears to not be selected. Why can I access the check box on the one machine but not on the other when to all intents and purposes these are identical machines.
