Terry,
Parts of what you say are interesting. Yes it does take a number of years to master a tool. It took me quite a few to master FoxBase to VFP... That didn't stop me from learning other tools. Why should it stop anyone else? The brain is a wonderful thing. People are capable of learning quite a few things. You should try it.

Some folks learn to expand their horizons. Just like some people learn to master more than one language (real language - English, French, German, Spanish, etc) some people can master more than one development tool.

You are a consultant correct? What makes you more valuable. Knowledge of just VFP ? Or knowledge of some combination of VFP, Access, VB, C#, .NET, Java, Perl, T-SQL, XML, Oracle and others. How can you sit at the table and discuss enterprise issues without a decent knowledge of more than one development tool? If your clients are small ones that dont really need to know about these topics great!. I have some clients that are excatly in the same boat. However, when you get beyond the small to middle size clients you better be knowledgeable about at least some of these topics.
