Can you please elaborate on "anything that rebuilds a cursor closes it"?

I have several files in my data environment: sales (parent), salesItem (child), salesman, terms, customer. The combo box for customer is ok. When I click on the combo box for salesman or terms, the combo box for item selection in the grid disappear & I can't access the grid anymore.
