Michelle,
Your life will be easier getting a Help Authoring tool. I use ForeHelp
www.ff.com it gives you a WYSIWYG environment to build and test your help file in. You'll easily save the cost of the tool in the time it saves compared to using Word. RoboHelp is another good tool but I've not used it. They both come in full suites that let you produce every imaginable kind of output file, to less expensive single output format versions.
>I'm getting ready to begin the horrific task of putting online help in a rather large and confusing application. To do this I want the best tools (little) money can buy.

>I know VFP has a help system with it. Is this easy to use?

>I've also looked at shareware ones. For shareware, they tend to be expensive. I have no idea how much a commercial one costs.

>I'd like something that's easy to use and interfaces well with VFP. If the one from VFP fits those qualifications, where can I get more info on it. The book I have has a small chapter, and only part of that is on the kind of help that looks like Windows Help. The rest is on some other kind that I haven't quite figured out, yet.
