A lot of people do file nuisance suits to make a quick buck. Frequently it's for a small amount so that it becomes cheaper to settle than to fight the case.

Since I'm a firm believer in the jury system, whenever I hear about some stupidly large amount of money being awarded for a seemingly minor offense I tend to think that there is something about the case that is not being reported. The Jay Leno's of the world can convict anybody of anything, but our jurys get to hear all the evidence and, I think, tend to do a good job of getting to the truth.
