Hi Martin.. thanks for all your helpful comments

Is there any way of knowing how much data is sent up and down the line using TS. I take from your comments that the amount of data will be a lot more than HTTP, but it would be nice to be able to quiantify it first, before making the decision as to which way to go.

(If I was able to put through , say 20 transactions, and have a meter count up.....

Is 3G , in your experience, also unsuited to a Terminl Services model as this may also be an option.

Regards,

Gerard

>>>No, it is not the same amount of data. Terminal Services is sending deltas of the screen to the client, no data at all is going trough except this image. Even so, in a good designed Web application you tipically don't send the 200 customer records, but a smaller set based on some kind of filtering or paging mechanism.

>Not necesarilly. TS is sending bitmaps chunks, which is compressed binary information, while an HTML page is sending compressed text (and HTTP is very efficient compressing HTML). The difference is in the model. A Web page works generally better in a disconnected scenario. GPRS is not the best protocol to handle permament connections like TS needs.

>Yes, you could (and most probably should) used the same filer criteria. But the fact remains that while you move around in the screen in TS you kee sending data (very little) back and forth. In HTML you send the page, then the user works client side until it needs to send another request.

>>running XP embedded... I dont know if this will make a difference with regard to data transferred .

>Well, if it is a TabletPC, then it the screen size is not a problem. You can use almost the same desktop app, although you would probably need to change the interface if the user would be using it with a stylus more than with the keyboard. Take in consideration that a bigger screen mean more data transfer for TS also. In my experience, GPRS is not well suited for this model.
