I bielve it was president Dwight Eisenhauer (spell?). Something to do with him wanting to distinquish the United States from the Russians. So yeah I think you're right. Originally the word "God" wasn't there.

Really I'm indifferent about this matter. But I think there are bigger battles to fight then this. But that's just me. :-)
