I know he is not a racist. He and his wife is, and has been, involved in a inner city program called Best Friends. It's geared to help kids in the inner city, and guess what, they happen to be mostly black kids. Would a real raciest do this or would you say this is just a publicity thing he and his wife is doing? Or some how he is exploiting these kids?
I've read it several times and heard the conversation. And I'm still convenced that he is literally being misunderstood and, quite frankly intentionally being slamed by overly sensitve and over zealous people who don't really know him... you know... "ah, he's a conservative so he must be a racist..." attitude that some people have. Sam,
I don't think Bennett is a racist. I do believe he's a supreme elitist.
I'm quite far to the right, and I'm disappointed in Bennett. At one point I thought he'd provide philosophical ammo to many conservative causes. What he said was just plain stupid, and added fuel the fire for those who believe that bigotry and narrow-mindedness are inherent to conservatism. They already have enough after watching that almost laughable Rose Garden news conference this morning.
I've heard post after post about "he was taken out of context", and I just don't see it that way. I think there are limits to how far one can use that as a defense.
