I don't think you can compare the current state of affairs to the death of the mainframe back when. The apps that were on the mainframe were hugh beasts that typically would be very expensive to rewrite. And it was easy to have one guy in the back corner whose job it was to maintain the mainframe.

In this case, if the company has enough money to hire an expensive consultant, why not just rewrite the app in dotnet/java? I think it's two totally different scenarios.
