Mike,
The Read Only checkbox has 3 different states, unchecked, checked and partly checked (a square inside the checkbox instead of a check mark). Which state is persistent on your customer's computer?

We brought in the technician for the customer who logged on a site administrator and he also was unable to premanently remove the check from the "read only" check box.
