The antenna receives both types of signals. I can watch the snowy channels if I want, but why bother? The digital signal is clear at all times. You either get a signal or you don't, nothing in between. It does require a TV capable of receiving digital signals, which I'd say most new TVs you can buy today have that capability. Here in Phoenix, I have about 25 stations that broadcast a digital signal (some stations broadcast more than one).

(Silly question, I know, but we only have one station here that broadcasts digital signals so far which I believe was also the first in the country to do so - WRALTV in Raleigh, NC. It broadcasts on channel 32 at 100 kilowatts).
