Typical open water certification allows going down 60 feet, and I received advanced certification last weekend which gets you to 100 feet. Recreational dive depth limit is typically 130 feet, only for commercial and professional divers go beyond that, although some people do push their limits beyond that. I don't have any plans to go beyond 30 meters, plenty to see within that depths and you can stay underwater longer, etc. Lots of info on the PADI web site at http://padi.com/english/common/courses/faq.asp.
