Jay;

I thought the motivation of the American Revolution was based upon, “No taxation without representation”? Everything I have read indicates our Revolution was based upon commercial and monetary self interests. Only 6% of the people living in the Colonies wanted a Revolution with England.

Without the help of France and Poland the Americans would not have won the war. Imagine Prussian's helping the English! They were the "finest soldiers" in Europe at that time and George Washington and his men kicked their a**es!

Now when it comes to religious freedom, you had better check into how intolerant the Puritans were. Persons who shared religious beliefs different than the Puritans were not appreciated, and had a difficult time until the Puritans were outnumbered by other members of different Protestant demonations. The Catholics were despised for their existence. We had a history of religious intolerance and in some areas we still do.

Many Catholics fought for freedom under George Washington. For decades the Protestants celebrated “Pope Day”, when an effigy of the Pope was burned in public. During the Revolutionary war Washington put a stop to this practice.
