Borislav's fix did the trick.

Not really. It just avoided the whole question. Borislav's suggestion of switching to the 80 report engine will give you your speed back, but you still don't know why these reports are slow under 90.

Sergey had the right idea about things to try, if you care about it. I'm not saying that you *should* care, necessarily, if you choose not to use any of the new features of the 90 report engine.

And as for where you find out about these kinds of things, please try reading the help file.
