It was about nothing of the sort. That is the sugarcoated version of American democracy that is still taught in American schools. The Revolutionary War was, like almost all wars, about money and territory. Religion had almost nothing to do with it, as much as modern day religious conservatives would like to make us think it did. The British did not suppress religious congregation in the colonies. Only a fraction, an estimated 15-20%, of colonists even attended church. Some of the colonists came here to escape religious persecution, but that was no longer an issue once they got here. The idea that our rebellion against England was based on religion is pure myth.
