>Ahhh, very interesting! So there WAS an Argentinian connection after all. You know, British military history is FULL of monumental blunders by the commanders. It's a wonder we ever managed to capture the Isle of Wight, never mind an empire!

>>There are many of those. I guess if you asked about British military blunders the first three that would come to mind (to me at least) would be Gallipolli, The Charge of the Light Brigade and maybe Khyber Pass. But as you see there are many more around. What would be the first few that come to a Brit mind?

>Well:
>- The WHOLE of the Somme campaign for a bloody big first!Yes. I somehow forgot it. Very clearly in first place.
Who was more to blame? Haig, Kitchener, maybe Lloyd George in a way?
Or Joffré, Foch, Poincaré battling more with their allies? I think Haig.
>- The Battle of PaschendaleNot familiar with it. Will look it up.
Ahh. I see: Battle of Passchendaele: 31 July - 6 November 1917
It is part of Ypres (WWI)
- the Battle of Ypres (in fact - any damn battle in that war!!!)Said above.
>- The Battle of Spion Kopje (Boer War)Agreed.
>- The fall of Singapore to the Japanese (to my mind the men would have been better off fighting on to the bitter end than how it turned out. Who knows - they may even have prevailed)Not sure this one could have been done much beter. They were unstoppable. The US could not really do much to avoid the fall of the Philippines eiother. They could have reinforced and resupplied McArthur but I dopubt it would have made a big difference. Same with Singapore.
>- (I think I've heard in the past) The failure to press on with the BEF in WW II to protect Norway (as I recall) and maybe halt Germany in its tracksOK. I guess basking in the glow of Jutland slowed them down, eh?
