>>I was wondering about that myself. It would be 100 years since the Spanish-American war, I thought the only Spanish territory that actually got its independence then was Cuba.

>I'll have to check my history at home. I think the Philippines were granted technical independance under US control after the Spanish-American War - kinda a hybrid. They were independant of their original colonial power, which is what I think they're celebrating.
That's correct. Let me put some info here:
1898 - Philippine Revolution / Declaration of Philippine Republic / Spanish-American War Ended
1941-1945 - Japanese Occupation
1898 - 1946 American Times
July 12, 1947 - Fil-Am Friendship Day / Declaration of Philippine Independence to the Americans.
1946 - 1965 Philippine Republic w/o American control
1965 - 1986 Marcos Regime / Dictatorship
1986 EDSA Revolution
Social environment here is a combination of the three: FILIPINO-SPANISH-AMERICAN
** Spaniards introduced Roman Catholicism.
** Americans introduced Biblical Christianity.
Sorry for the erring info John re: 1947.
