I used to have similar problems and I would reach a point where wiping the machine was by far the simplest solution. The fact that I'm retentive, and all my data files are kept on a different networked PC helped a lot. Just wipe/reinstall on the first one - about 2 hours for the basics; format, os, security, anti-virus, firewall, etc - then install all the other stuff I need - another 2 or 3 hours for office, photoshop, money, etc. It's amazing what applications you find you can do without after going through that once or twice.

Sorry I don't have more technical help for you, but I have tried to use many of the removal utilities and found they work sporadically at best.
