>Hmmmm ... maybe you missed the point of my joke. The majority of Americans speak only English. I don't know about the Brits or Spaniards, but I've been to France a couple of times and was amazed at how many are very fluent in English. And, in the parts of France that I visited, being close to Italy, many spoke Italian as well (and the Italians spoke French). Seems to me to be a very European thing to be fluent in more than one language. That's just not so here in the U.S.

Oh trust me on this one <s> The majority (English, French) don't speak another language. Speaking other languages seems to be the 'privilege' of those peoples where speaking only their mothers' tongue really isn't a viable option.
