I don't know about the Brits or Spaniards, but I've been to France a couple of times and was amazed at how many are very fluent in English. And, in the parts of France that I visited, being close to Italy, many spoke Italian as well (and the Italians spoke French). Seems to me to be a very European thing to be fluent in more than one language. That's just not so here in the U.S.

The English have got it down to a fine art: just shout it loudly in English, maybe throwing in the odd pseudo pidgin Spanish word in for good measure. e.g.

"Look. No wanto this. Comprendez? Ask him if he avez another but mucho larger"
