You make some good points, but this is a comment where I have a different view:

Granted, ADO.NET does not have the same capabilities as VFP - but it does allow developers to work with local data. There's more in ADO.NET than is commonly recognized, though it does take some time to get to the details. Not to advertise, but I have an article in the newest issue of CoDe on capabilities in ado.net 2.0 that you might want to check out.
