Hi Alan,

So to be safer, in addition to seatbelts, perhaps the government should mandate the wearing of fireproof suits and crash helmets while driving. No doubt that would save lives. Also we should be required to not drive unless we have had enough sleep and certainly no driving allowed within an hour of an argument with someone. Definitely areas for more legislation!!

Ken

>>In Tennessee it's not illegal, but I fear you are right. I don't think the government should be able to tell me I can't talk on the phone when driving. As you have already pointed out, it's the "distracted driver" problem, not the cell phone. We already have laws on the books that deal with not paying attention, so we don't need to be writing more.

>If those laws are anything like they are here, then they are way to vague to be of much use. The police do pull people over for doing all sorts of stupid things while they should be driving (reading the newspaper, for example), but not for cell phone use. How do you prove distraction unless the person actually has an accident. Then, of course, it's too late - maybe far too late. I'm all for making cell phone use while driving illegal.
