You are arguing my points. 7 yards is not a physical confrontation. Its pointing the gun and pulling the trigger from 5 or 10 or 20 feet. Its rolling down the window & shooting as they drive by. If someone did NOT have a gun and had to resort to some other weapon like a bat or crowbar, things change drastically. And its a bit harder to conceal a bat or crowbar than a gun. To get back to your original comment that if it wasnt guns, it would be another weapon... its a bit less likely that a person would have a bat or crowbar in their posession when they enter a club or a liquor store. Its the ease of concealment and the ability to avoid a physical confrontation that are intrinsic in guns that are not necessarily characteristics of other weapons.

>Most gun battles with police occur within 7 yards, and I'm sure the same would probably apply with the general population. Handgun battles are up close and personal. We don't have that many sniper related deaths. What you are missing is that homicides are generally a crime of PASSION, which means the murderer is ticked off and has decided to take you out. The element of surprise is almost always on the side of the aggressor, so close proximity is a necessary requirement.

>>A gun allows the attacker to avoid a physical confrontation with the victim. If the attacker didnt have a gun and instead had to physically attack someone with a Mont Blonc or even a baseball bat, there'd be less attacks for starters. You are a bit more likely to successfully defend yourself from someone attacking you with a pen or a bat, than you would from someone with a gun. And its easier to run away from an attacker whose weapon of choice is a pen/bat/crowbar than it is to run from someone who is shooting at you.
