Also known as a “Bronx Cheer”. Bronx for those of you who do not know is a burrow (section) of New York City. It is possible that the “Bronx Cheer” began with the New York Yankees baseball team which was formed in 1903. Inhabitants of the Bronx have little reverence or tolerance for anything and will let you know in your face!

Another term is to razz someone – same as a raspberry. Razz is a spoken term. My mom would use the term "rasberry" without the sound effects and I take it that it has been around since the early 1900’s.
