Never managed to do that. There's only a few centimeters between the backside of the keyboard and the edge of the flat drawer on which it rests. (Yes, it rests, I type :).

The "behind the keyboard" probably comes from "behind the wheel", which is, IMO, also a funny syntagm. Probably comes from the reduced number of prepositions in English. In Serbian, we'd have "za tastaturom", "za volanom" - where "za" with instrumental case means "at the helm of", or "at the tool/machine". This usage of "za" makes it very different from "iza" (though it's obviously derived from it) - "iza tastature" would really mean "behind the keyboard", in the strict sense that it fell behind it, or is hidden behind it, or, generally speaking, there's a keyboard between it and the person who speaks.
