The pious, God-fearing, religious, nice people that went to the Americas saw the poor nice natives that had not seen the light and asked Tupac-Amarú (their leader) to kiss their cross (and tell them where the gold was). When he refused they did what every good Christian should do to the ones that don't agree with the True Faith (tm). They tied his arms and legs to four horses and pulled. I leave the question of where was God at that moment and why did He permit that atrocity (and all others) as an exercise for the reader.
