I think they are rare in the amount of money they give up. I don't think it's as rare for people to join out of being patriotic. I do think a majority join for the college money, I have no doubt in that. But what's wrong with that? I joined for the college money. My parents would be regard as poor. I join the Army served my term (during Desert Strom) and went to college to be a computer programmer. I now make over 3 times what they make. So the Army helped me get a better job/life and hopefully now my kid won't have to join for college. He still might join for some other reason. So even if it's the poor that are joining it can be a way out for them as well.
