I have not met anyone that racist in at least 20 years in any country other than Germany. Mixed marriages are very common in the South. My best friend's daughter is bi-racial (legally she is considered black), my daughter's best friend is black, the professional I work with and most admire is a black woman. Most people probably really don't even think about it anymore unless something in the media
>brings your attention to it. Our last mayor was black. At least half of my daughter's teachers are black. How come no one ever asks me how many of my friends, coworkers, superiors, teachers, etc are white? The majority of our citizens in this area are black, not white. Interesting perspective...

When my mother (a Jew) married my father (a Russian non-Jew), it took a while before her parents were willing to acknowledge them again. Eventually, they came around and accepted my dad as a member of the family, but for a year or so, it was apparently tense. I should point out that I wasn't there to see it first hand, of course. ;)
