>Let's stick to one topic - illegal immigration. Chris is right. This isn't some "dirty little secret" - it has been going on for years, and has been for as long as I can remember.

>Day laborers have been a constant problem. The police don't do anything about it because they simply can't. No sooner is one gathering point cleaned up, then one or two more appear. There's a stretch of road not two blocks from the sherriff's dept. in my area that many of them gather. Basically, unless the men are breaking the law, police leave them alone.
I (think) I was suggesting busting the hirers, not the hirees. Arrest the guys in the truck giving them the jobs illegally. I just have to wonder what would happen if the demand was dried up. And no doubt it's easier said than done.

>Do you honestly think this topic has been brought up to distract Americans from what's happening in Iraq? Do you really think we are that stupid?
Based on seeing the same tactic here, for similar reasons in my mind (distraction from real problems), I do feel that I've correctly estimated the Republicans' need for a "gut-issue" rather than performance issues.
I would have doubted the fatuity of the American voter until I saw how a gay-related ballot item got President Bush re-elected. Now I simply don't know but think the politicians think they do.
cheers
