I gather this is doable with VFP by itself, but can I use VFP to interface with & control IE4 (via ActiveX, VBScript, Java or some third party package) without having to run some kind of "web server" process in the background?

If you use VFP as the 'ap' that is run, and you can use OLE to provide the browser interface, sure, why not.. look at Ken Levys... www.classx.com for his webexplorerx stuff.. it should get you going.
