These contractors had no problem agreeing to work for the company. The company does not care them, and they should know that. It's part of the bargain. To be honest, permanent employees aren't much better off, they just don't know it. At least as a contractor, you know the score upfront.

I've done contract work over here for many years and have never and would never expect to be told "don't come in next week". I do take holidays but that always arranged in consultation with the client. This sort of thing sounds more like a zero hours contract which we tend to get here only in fast food outlets like McCrap.
