Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I remember prog rock from its heyday in the 1970s, when King Crimson, Yes, Supertramp, et al were still putting out albums. (The stuff they are remembered for, not the capitalizing-on-our-reputation ones that came later). They were in most cases skilled musicians, and they meshed well with the other youth fashion of the time, drugs, especially hallucinogens. But IMO there was something soulless about their music. Punk and new wave didn't come about for no reason. They were a direct reaction to the lack of passion in prog rock.
