But IMO there was something soulless about their music.

Have to admit, I never considered Yes to be soulless. Here's something - if you have the opportunity, listen to the Yes song "And You and I" from the "Close to the Edge" album. Rick Wakeman once described this as the quintessential Yes song.

The song is many things, but I can't say I would have ever used the term soulless.
