I just did the re-boots.
Even re-booted this system after.
Before I did I changed the IE6 "Advanced" option and checked (on) the always check for IE updates.
When I started IE after the re-boot it too was unable to get to the update site!!!

I wonder if my ISP could be implicated here. I think I'll try giving them a call.
