Have you seen "The Decalogue"? (Alternate English spelling: "The Dekalog"). It is a series of episodes directed by the late, great Krzysztof Kieslowski, originally aired on Polish television. Each episode is loosely based on one of the 10 commandments. I won't say any more than that to avoid spoiling it for you, if you haven't already seen it. It's not an ostentatious, shoot 'em up kind of thing, nor is it artsy fartsy, but somehow it works its way into your soul.
Kieslowski is probably best known in this country for his "Tres Colors" movies ("Red", "Blue", and "White"). They're equally good. My intro to Kieslowski was seeing "Red" in a small, steamy theater in Wilmette when the movie we went to see was sold out. It was a date night for my wife and me and we decided what the hell, let's watch whatever-this-is-in-theater-2. I didn't know diddly about Kieslowski, didn't know any of the actors and actresses, had no idea what was going on for probably the first half hour. And then it grabbed me.
Everything he ever filmed was about the human condition, basically. But never in a boring eat-your-peas way. He is missed.
