Thank you for responding Yuri.

>What do you mean, "I can not open jpg files with Microsoft Photo Editor"? Any errors?

Microsoft Photo Editor was the application I've had associated with jpg and jpeg files. Some time ago (perhaps a month) I was able to open those files by double clicking them and often did that with pictures contained in a zip file. A few days ago I tried to double click on a jpg file contained inside a zip file and got a message "Can't open file". After trying various combinations I discovered that I got the same message when trying to open unzipped jpg files. I can still open jpg files with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Paint, and Internet Explorer, so the problem occurs with Microsoft Photo Editor only.

The reason I continue trying to use Microsoft Photo Editor is because it is able to open several photos contained in a zip file in the same instance of Microsoft Photo Editor. Microsoft Office Picture Manager opens a separate instance for each photo, and this is not very practical. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer works great if the photos are extracted to a directory, but not while the photos are still in the zip file. It can only view one photo at a time if they are inside a zip file.

A possible cause of the problem is Office 2007 beta that I installed about 10 days ago. I have since unisntalled everything except Outlook, because it apparently has a different file format than Outlook XP and you can't go back! I also reinsalled Microsoft Photo Editor from the Office XP CD but no results.

Another cause of the problem may be a recent Windows security patch.

If I change the application used to open the file I get the results described above, same as if I chose Open with...

What do you think? Thanks.

>>I just noticed yesterday that I can not open jpg files with Microsoft Photo Editor, which has been my default jpg viewer for a while and which I like. The main suspect is MS Office 2007 Beta, but it is also possible that the cause is a Windows security update. I tried reinstalling it but no luck. No luck either with deinstalling Access 2007 (did this because of a comment found via google that Access 2003 affected Microsoft Photo Editor. Apparently it was possible to reinstall then. The comment went on that Microsoft Photo Editor apparently has an internal jpg viewer. Perhaps that is considered a security risk?)

>>I like Microsoft Photo Editor because with it you can view several pictures in a zip file with a single object in the Windows task bar. Some other applications fill the task bar with different instances. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which works nicely, requires that photos be extracted to a real folder first.
