Visual FoxPro and .NET
>I have read several of the threads recently on VFP vs .net. And of course it is easy to see which side people take. But I continue to wonder why does it always comes down to VFP or .Net! When I check monster.com and other job sites I see that companies want Java programmers. Almost 3 to 1 over .Net! (I'm in Calif) I continue to see Linux gaining on MS. I see how excited others (not me) get about Ajax and Ruby on Rails.

First, since vfp is windows based, we have only a little problem with being windows-fenced in. The usual argument of more platform for java vs. better dev tools for MS is still true, but this is not as big as before. Also java setups are even more geared for "enterprize" development - wheras you can do a bit more in .Net working in small groups.
I personally wonder why python is not mentioned here more often - this is a nice language from what (little) I have seen yet, and the development pattern/style can be similar to actively using the interpreter to run parts of a system.
And no, I am not ditching the fox - but I used vb and c with already in last century. Use the appropriate tool.
