I dare say that what may have been happening for years was different.
A 60 Minutes episode had the guy who invented "rendition" smugly describing why/how he did it and that "protcting Americans" was his overriding concern. If I remember correctly his 'invention' was towards the tail end of the Clinton administration.

In my OPINION it would never be right to yank a citizen off the streets and allow no due process and possibly send them overseas for "rendition", I could see some possible justification in the caase of aliens EXCEPT that in the current atmosphere the tendency is to too grossly magnify possible suspicious activity (even hearsay is good enough) and presume guilt. When one has no chnace at all to prove innocence that simply cannot be tolerated.
Today "them", tomorrow possibly you.
