I understand how to turn off all of the nice new features. I just don't understand why we have to accept that for an answer. Why does everyone think it's ok to do without the new features if we want speedy report printing? Why did we upgrade? The reporting engine was supposed to be the big deal for this new release. But it's functionally unuseable with this slowness issue. Our users will not tolerate standing around a printer for an hour. So again I ask if anyone knows if Microsoft intends to do something about it? If not, all that hard work on the new engine was wasted time and money for them.

I understand your frustration.

However I do not believe that every report experiences the slow rendering. It seems to be report-specific.

What's more, I have heard many stories from people who are overjoyed at the new features and are busy doing productive things they could not have done before. So there is no doubt in my mind that the 9.0 reporting engine was worth the development effort.

I agree, it is a shame if you were persuaded to upgrade to VFP9.0 purely on the promises of the features of the new reporting system, and you have found that it does not work to your advantage in your particular situation.

Now, you say this: The report is usually rather small, 6 to 12 pages or so [..] It took 14 seconds between pages on the printer. So that's one minute and twenty four seconds to print a six page report.

SET REPORTB 90 is somewhat slower than 80, but this just does not sound normal. I have questions:
  • Are you using a network printer?

  • How fast does the same report take with SET REPORTB 80?

  • Have you tried printing to a local printer connected directly to the computer? Just for comparison purposes.

  • Does your report contain graphics?

  • If so, is it possible to try the report with lower-resolution images to see if there is a change in printing speed?

  • How much RAM does the computer have? Can you try the report on a range of machines to see if there is a correlation?
