from what I've heard and read tableUpdate() and tableRevert() are for Optimistic record locks which I'm not using.

That is not the case. You can use tableupdate() and tablerevert() as long as you have buffering of some sort. FWIW, there is possible data corruption in 3.0b when row buffering is used, so you'll be better off with table buffering.
