>Hi, Alan,

>Yes, "Time Enough for Love" and "Stranger in a Strange Land" are two of my favorites. I don't know much about Heinlein personally (other than the fact that he was a military man). My favorite sci-fi authors are Heinlein and Zelazny.

You know, I forgot completely about Zelazny. I was a huge fan of his. I have to admit though that I did eventually tire of the Amber series. He did write one book with Phil Dick - "Deus Irae". Very good stuff. I guess you can't think of everybody on the spur of the moment. John Brunner, Fred Saberhagen, John Blish, Osron Scott Card, Sarah Zettel are some names that come to mind now as great authors. If you really want to reas something that'll absolutely knock your socks off, read "The Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis. A truly remarkable achievment.

>I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never read anything by Phil Dick. I'm taking a week off in August where I'm doing nothing but reading (non-computer material!) and listening to bop until my ears bleed, so I might check out one of his books. I just read some of the Amazon reviews of "Altered Carbon", that also sounds like something worth reading. Thanks for the tips.

Altered Carbon is the first of what is so far a trilogy. The others are also first class, but the first, probably because it was the first, stands out for me. If you do decide to read Dick, please try to find "The Man in the High Castle" (don't know if it's still around) and/or "UBIK" and /or "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch".

>Different subject, I discovered two Cannonball Adderley albums called "Cannonball Plays Zawinul" and "Cannonball in Europe". Holy smokes! Bop on steroids. There's a 13-minute track on the former, called "74 Miles Away" - stunning. Who said it can't be Christmas on July 22nd? ;)

I can imagine. Nobody is more bop than Zawinul. I heard a great piece the other day by Freddie Hubbard with Stanley Turrentine, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, and Eric Gale. It's from an album called "In Concert - Volume 1". It's a very long piece - about 20 minutes, and worth every second. I know he can be... well... inconsistent, but this was truly one of his very good days, and he and Turrentine work together beautifully.

>Oh, and I almost forgot - you recommended Tom Harrell to me. I got hold of "Art of Rhythm". It's very good. A little more laid back than what I normally listen to, but the playing is immaculate. I read his bio, he's come a very long way.

The guy is remarkable even without considering his background and illness. He played a long time with Phil Woods.

Some of his other albums are a little less laid back, but yes, he is more laid back than a lot of the others, but his playing is so lyrically beautiful that I can listen to him for a very long time without ever getting tired of it.
