This reminded me - the only other case when I felt my hands were so tied was one IBM 386 PC, which had a special version of closed DOS, where it took about a dozen trips to another machine, creating a few different boot floppies etc until I was able to break out of its shell and make autoexec.bat editable. Took me two hours, and only after that I was able to start installing my app.
